Black Forest Carved Mantel Clock

Black Forest mantel clock beautifully hand carved with fine attention to detail depicting a farmyard scene with a hen and chick feeding and a cockerel resting on a wheat sheaf surmounting the clock which rests on a stepped moulded plinth.

Wooden dial with carving to the centre, individual enamel blue Roman numerals with matching hands.

Eight day French movement striking the hours and halves on a silvered bell by Japy Freres and numbered 7369, the original pendulum also numbered 7369. C.1870

The clockmaking dynasty of Japy Freres was started in 1806 by Fredric Japy and carried on by his sons Pierre and Louis, in their home town of Beacourt in France.

Japy Freres were widely regarded as the leading French makers of the period.

The company became known for producing reliable, quality clocks and watches and expanded rapidly becoming one of the most prolific makers. The business continued until the late 1930’s.
