Object Description
A very fine and elegant Georgian flame mahogany bowfront stick barometer, dated c.1790.
The swan-neck pediment is surmounted by a fine bone vase finial. The finely engraved silvered brass register plates are signed by the maker, Henry Austin of London and bear a rack-and-pinion operated vernier.
The bowed trunk has well figured mahogany veneers, ebony banded. It is fitted with a mercury thermometer within a glazed box, the convex glass following the bow of the trunk. The silvered thermometer plate is engraved with a scale in degrees Fahrenheit.
The base terminates in an ebonised urn-shaped cover concealing the mercury cistern. This is flanked with canted corners, inlaid with ebony stringing.
