Object Description
A very fine Ancient Roman Republican silver denarius, minted by a travelling military mint moving with Brutus and Cassius in Western Asia Minor or Northern Greece. The obverse features the laureate head of Apollo facing right. His facial features have been beautifully rendered, with long soft curls trailing down the back of his neck. The accompanying legend reads LEG COSTA, standing for LEGATVS COSTA, referring to the moneyer Pedanius Costa, who issued this coin as Legate under Brutus. The reverse displays a trophy, holding two spears and a figure-eight shield. The accompany legend reads IMP BRVTVS, short for IMPERATOR BRVTVS (Imperator Brutus), meaning Imperator (Supreme commander) Brutus. Both the obverse and the reverse are presented within a circular border of dots.
