Object Description

A Extremely Good Quality Mid 19th Century Burr Walnut Pedestal Desk, Of Good Practical Proportions, Having Attractive Gilt Tooled Leather Inset Top, Over Nine Freize Drawers With Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Raised On Original Plinths And Recessed Castors.

Makers Stamp To Drawer – “J Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour Street, Soho, London”.

Well respected cabinet makers James Winter & Sons were based in Soho between 1823 and 1870. They are known for producing and retailing some quite fabulous pieces of antique furniture during that time. The company was founded by James Winter in 1823 and was later joined by his sons, at which point the company became James Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour St, Soho, London, as seen on the stamp to this desk.

This practical desk boasts very attractive and well figured walnut veneers and is excellent quality throughout with the all important drawers still running as smoothly as the day they were made. The turned wooden knob handles are also original and in good condition which is quite the rarity on this type of desk, with them nearly always having been replaced with some type of brass handle or knob instead.

The size is a breath of fresh air for those with little available floor space to set up a working from home environment, as it manages to be big enough and offer enough storage for practical day to day working whilst noty being too imposing in a room. It is also designed so that it can be positioned either freestanding centrally or against a wall which of course adds even further to its versatility.

Georgian and Victorian pedestal desks vary wildly in style, shape, size, finish and quality, and this example is certainly in the top bracket in that respect.

The desk does come into three pieces for ease of transportation as is common for this period and that of course makes it even easier to get into absolutely any location around the home which the purchaser desires.

As with all items which we offer for sale this 19th century desk has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers and received a traditional wax polish finish to ensure that it is absolutely ready to be placed straight into a home, or office environment.
