Byzantine Bronze Openwork Attachment with a Cross

Object Description

An elaborate, Byzantine bronze openwork attachment disc, originally a decorative element from a lamp- or censer-chain. The semi-circular attachment consists of a cross patée in the middle, surrounded by a wide perforated border with serrated edges and projecting semi-circles.The piece features two loops at opposite points of the circumference, one smaller one at the top, where a single chain would have been attached, and a wider loop at the bottom, for multiple chains holding the flat section ring of the polycandelon or the censer. Two larger bosses with granules frame the top arm of the cross. The surface of the attachment is decorated with ring-and-dot motifs.

Object Condition

Very good condition. The top left circular projection is chipped. Patination to the surface. The piece is supplied with a custom-made stand.
