Object Description
A stunning and extremely fine Byzantine, solid gold cross with an inset gemstone cabochon. The cross features four stepped, conical arms which project from a central polished cabochon, deep pink in colour and possibly a garnet or ruby. The gemstone is surrounded on each side by a claw, holding it in place and resembling stylised ivy leaves. From the top arm of the cross there is an articulated suspension loop, allowing the piece to be hung. An exquisite example of Byzantine craftsmanship.
