Object Description

A Byzantine earthenware hand grenade. It features a short neck with a small opening, a hollow bulbous body leading to a pointed base. The mouth allowed the item to be filled with incendiary liquids to be used in battle and would have also accommodated a fuse to instigate the explosion. There is a crack to the base of the grenade.

Date: Circa 9th-11th century AD

From a collection of a North London gentleman, latterly with a London gallery.

Object Condition

Good condition, earthy encrustations remain on the surface. Minor indentations to the body. Repair to the base.
