Object Description

A porcelain cup and saucer from the Cau Mau shipwreck displaying a beautiful landscape and flower scenes in varying blue hues. The saucer features a lake with a temple in the distance, a figure fishing, a boat and trees. The imagery is framed by a hatched band along the rim. The reverse features a light brown exterior from the sea water exposure with white deposits. The cup features a floral scene including chrysanthemum and peony branches. To the centre of the interior is a single flower spray encompassed by a ring. A hatch band enriches the rim. The base of both feature the previous owner’s collection numbers while the saucer also has the official Ca Mau sticker.

Measurement of the cup:7.1cm width, 3.6cm height

Period: Qing Dynasty

Object History

From the Ca Mau shipwreck, which sank between 1723-1735 and was recovered in 1998.

Object Condition

Fine condition, with deposits and encrustations due to age and seawater exposure. Small chip to the rim of the saucer.
