Object Description
A mahogany Clothes Horse or Uniform Rail made to dismantle.
The construction of this Uniform Horse is simple with the two uprights united by a top rail and a stretcher. They are both cut with tenons to each end to fit into mortices cut into the uprights. Brass and steel bolts are then used to pass though the centre of the mortice and tenon joints to fix the four parts together.
The Rail has shaped, down swept feet and a spiral twist to the columns to give an elegance that offsets the solid feel given by the thickness of timber used. The Rail is a good-sized piece of furniture and would have been useful for an officer to hang their uniforms. Early 19th Century.
