Object Description
A mahogany and beech Douro Campaign Chair which is a little different to most.
The hinged arm posts are made in a square section when normally they are turned. This follows through on the X frame legs. Most Douro chairs have a little shaping to the legs and are not as utilitarian in look. Added to this, Douro chairs traditionally have a caned back where as this one shows no evidence of cane work. We have replaced the material to the back and the hessian to the seat. The chair also stands out for having brass caps to the stretcher. The turned stretcher and its caps are the one concession to decoration on the chair.
The bottom third of the back has a historic steel bracing bar screwed to it for strength. Presumably at some stage the owner decided that the back’s construction wasn’t strong enough and so reinforced it.
The Douro is a classic campaign chair made by many makers and this is an unusual variant of the design. Circa 1900.
