Object Description

A mahogany Serving or Consul Table.

The table has D ends and a central, frieze drawer with knob handles. The turned and reeded legs look to be a Gillows design and the Cope & Collinson porcelain castors are known to have been used by the company. However, there were many journeymen cabinet makers in Lancashire who worked both for Gillow and in their own right producing similar furniture to the company. The top edge of the table has a thumbnail moulding with a concave moulding below it. The bottom edge of the top has a smaller moulding to also lift it, as does the edge of the drawer. The back of the top has a low gallery. The secondary wood, to the underside of the table is pine.

As a Serving Table it is perhaps a little shorter in length than most, as a Consul Table maybe under stated. Perhaps it was meant to be useful as both. Its size and the fact that it has legs removable on wooden threads does make it a very practical piece of furniture. Its original intention may have been for use as an additional table in a country house. Stored when not needed and set up when there was a party etc.

This is a good looking table that is of a size that would not dominate a room but would be practical as a side or serving table. Circa 1830.

Height to the top of the back gallery is given.

Object Condition

Good, small section of moulding to the back replaced.
