Object Description

An early 20th century antique English stained glass window detailed with the Cardiff Coat of Arms. This stained glass window is one of a series of panels we are selling from towns and cities on the coasts of the British Isles.

Located on the south coast of Wales, Cardiff is the country’s capital city and the largest in Wales, known throughout history for its many castles and access to the sea at the historic Cardiff Bay. It’s history spans more than 6,000 years but the city itself wasn’t named as capital until 1955.

The Cardiff Coat of Arms centres around a fiery red dragon – a focal point of the national Welsh flag – holding a flag with a red backdrop detailed with white chevrons. A leek grows from the ground to the left-hand side; the leek is the national emblem of Wales. Although the Coat of Arms wasn’t officially granted until 1906, the City of Cardiff had used the crest unofficially for many years beforehand, the arms dating back to medieval lords of the area.

Cardiff’s long-standing maritime heritage is reflected in this stunning window by the diamond-shaped pane towards the left-hand side, hand-painted with old English sailing ship.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Two strap repairs: one through the ship pane and another through the dragon. Fitted into an original steel frame. Photographed in front of a light box.
