Object Description

Giltwood “sansovino” poplar frame, now with a mirror plate, carved profusely with pierced foliate decoration, swags, cornucopii and with angel heads retaining their original polychrome. Italy, probably Venice, 17th century. Fitted with a beautiful foxed antique mercury mirror plate.

Object History

This type of picture frame, richly carved with scrolls, masks and swags of fruit, is known as a Sansovino frame after the Italian sculptor and architect Jacobo Sansovino (1486-1570), whose buildings were particularly influential on the decorative arts from about 1530

Object Condition

Original gilding and original polychrome decoration. Some damage to the extremities of the carving and two small restorations to the bottom frieze .
