Born Catharine Whalley Alexander, she studied at the Slade School of Art. In 1925 she married Noel Carrington, the author and publisher who was the brother of Dora Carrington. Through her relationship with Dora she became closely associated with other members of the Bloomsbury Group.

The present work probably dates to her time at the Slade when she would have been a near contemporary to Mary Adshead and Rex Whistler.
