Object Description

A very rare 18th century George II period mahogany armchair. The cartouche shaped and moulded back with a carved and scrolled cresting, the shaped scrolled moulded arms with crescent supports, the oval drop-in seat covered in beautiful 18th century floral needlework on yellow ground with mahogany veneered frame, raised on cabriole front legs carved with a shell “hipped-up” into the frame with husking below, terminating in boldly carved claw and ball feet, the racked back legs terminating in pad feet. The finely carved shell motif “hipped up” into the seat frame with tapering bell flowers below suggests the work of the famous London cabinet maker Giles Grendey.
