Object Description

Charles II Antique Stumpwork Embroidery Picture. Framed in an old maple frame with gilt slip and rippled old glass. Stitched onto linen, which is stretched over card. Acid free card backing. The embroidery has raised work motifs, in silk, on a silk ground, in a variety of intricate stitches. Colours blues, cream, red, yellow, white, black, pink, greens and browns. Pictorial scene depicts two ladies, a gentleman beside water, a child standing in the water. (possibly representing, ‘The Finding of Moses’.) The central scene is surrounded by wonderful motifs, including: a lion, a leopard, birds, a moth, a country house, a rainbow, flowers and leaves.

Object Condition

Good. No holes. A couple of stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Unevenly stretched, resulting in wrinkling to the backing in places. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ‘as is’.
