Object Description

A very fine Chester hallmarked “Vaphio Cup” which has been designed with bulls roaming in a wooded setting. In another part of the scene, a man can be seen capturing one of the bulls by tying a rope around its leg. The craftsmanship is superb and the quality is excellent. This cup has been well cared for over the years and would make an important addition to a Chester silver collection. It remains in excellent condition.

The Vaphio cup is a copy of one of the original solid gold cups found in the Vapheio tholos tomb in Laconia, south of Sparta on mainland Greece. The gold cups have been preserved in the Archaeological Museum in Athens.
