Object Description

An early 20th century antique English stained glass window detailed with the Chichester Coat of Arms. This stained glass window is one of a series of panels we are selling from towns and cities on the coasts of the British Isles.

While Chichester city is situated just inland of the British south coast, Chichester Harbour lies to the south-west and flows south to join the English Channel.

The Chichester crest dates back to 1570 when it was granted by Royal Patent. The Coat of Arms is divided in two, the top half of which details a lion in a passant guardant position above a silver backdrop detailed with red drops. In this window, the crest is captured before a castle with the sun rising behind, among intricately detailed scrolling foliage.

Chichester’s long-standing maritime heritage is reflected in this stunning window by the diamond-shaped pane towards the bottom, hand-painted with old English sailing ship.
