Object Description
Chinese hardstone and cloisonné enamel flower tree model
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 54cm, width 42cm, depth 39cm
Depicting a basket filled with a lavish floral composition, this charming objet d’art was crafted in 20th century China.
A central tree trunk extends upwards from which further, smaller branches are growing. These terminate with delicate hardstone flower models. The flowers are separated into types, each one crafted from a different type of hardstone including jade, rose quartz, and carnelian. Bright coloured beads are used for the stigmas. Interspersed among the flowers are variously sized leaves of a darker hue.
The basket is executed using the very complex and time-consuming technique of cloisonne enamelling. The bulbous body is adorned with green, white, pink, and red floral and scrolling motifs, some relating to important symbols within Chinese culture. The wide lip of the vase is framed by a gold-coloured border, and both the inside and the outside are filled with various polychrome decorations, all in keeping with the design below. The angular gilt metal handle extends above the floral composition.
The delicate flower model would act as a superb table centrepiece.
