Object Description

The moulded cornice above a pair of short drawers and three long graduated drawers flanked by chevron carved quarter columns and a lower section of two short and two long graduated drawers, all outlined with bead moulding and retaining original gilded handles and escutcheons resembling examples in Chippendale Director, raised on shaped bracket feet.

Object Literature

The quality and design and craftsmanship are exceptional suggesting the piece may have been made by Chippendale during his early years in London and designed by Matthias Darly, a professional designer, engraver & drawing master. Chippendale may have received this artistic education from Darly. Throughout 1753 Chippendale & Darly were collaborating on the plates for ‘The Gentleman and Cabinet- Maker’s Director’ published in 1754
