Object Description
Classical style Italian green marble ewer vase with pedestal
Italian, 19th Century
Height 114cm, width 38cm, depth 37cm
This decorative Italian ewer has been sculpted from Italian ‘serpentine’ green marble, in the style of Classical vases. Its shape is a variation on that of a Greek lekythos, only with an extended narrow, long neck and a rounded almost spherical body. The vase is set on a fluted, flaring pedestal and its body is also decorated with fluting. Its long, slender neck opens out to a wide spout. The ewer’s handle is shown entwined with leaves and is mounted on to the side of its body with a sculpted male bust. Elegant and grand, this impressive and imposing piece combines Classical sophistication with later, rich, ornate, and floral embellishment.
