Object Description

A superb collection of 19th century encaustic tiles in post-medieval patterns by a range of historic British makers including Minton Hollins, W. Godwin of Lugwardine and J. C. Edwards of Ruabon.

Varying in size and style, this collection contains 41 decorative antique tiles, displayed as groups of four and nine; supplied loose. The sets are harmonised by their buff, red and black tones, showcasing a range of medieval style patterns including fleur-de-lis, scrolling foliage and flowers.

This unique group is a superb collector’s set, documenting a range of styles by notable British makers and creators of the 19th century.

Set includes:

– (Top left & similar) Minton Hollins, circa 1880. Each tile: 4 and ¼ inch square. Overall set: 22.5 cm square, 1 cm deep.
– (Top centre & similar) W. Godwin of Lugwardine, circa 1860. Each tile: 4 and ¼ inch square. Overall set: 21.5 cm square, 2 cm deep.
– (Centre left) W. Godwin of Lugwardine, circa 1860. Each tile: 4 and ¼ inch square. Overall set: 21.5 cm square, 1 cm deep.
– (Centre) J. C. Edwards of Ruabon, circa 1890. Each tile: 3 inch square. Overall: 23 cm square, 1 cm deep.
– (Centre right) W. Godwin of Lugwardine, circa 1860. Each tile: 4 and ¼ inch square. Overall set: 21.5 cm square, 1 cm deep.

Object Condition

Good, clean condition. Supplied loose. Minor chips and scuffs. Some with a little discolouration in places. Lightly cleaned; may clean up more with further cleaning.

FROM THE M50 / ROSS-ON-WYE

At the end of the M50, take the A40 towards Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. Take the A49 Hereford Road (third roundabout after leaving the M50). Ignore the first two signposts for Wormelow, stay on the A49 for approximately nine miles and take the next left turn after passing the Pilgrim Hotel, signed A466 Wormelow. Follow the road for approximately 400 meters. We are located halfway down the hill on the right-hand side. The site is called: Grove Farm / The Grove.

FROM A49 HEREFORD

Follow the A49 south from Hereford for approximately five miles. After the uphill section at the Callow, there is a layby on your right followed by one on your left. Take the next right turn onto the A466 signed Wormelow / Monmouth. Follow the road for approximately 400 meters. We are located halfway down the hill on the right-hand side. The site is called: Grove Farm / The Grove.
