Object Description

A collection of minerals and crystals in a fan-shaped case. These exquisite minerals are nicely presented in a bevelled fan-shaped mahogany display case, dating to circa 1850, with delicate brass beading to its edges, as well as an original lock and key.

This collection features rhodochrosite, pyrite, geodes, kyanite, sulphur, calcite, and dioptase.

This exquisite group of specimens have been hand-selected from British collections to create a unique set. Arranged in any formation, they make striking decorative pieces for a sideboard or collector’s cabinet, showcasing wondrous specimens of the natural world.

A bit more about some of the specimens featured…

Calcite

Formed over millions of years, this natural calcite specimen showcases spectacular dogtooth scalenohedral crystals – also known as dogtooth spar – and has a light coloured, almost translucent quality.

Fluorite

Fluorite forms in bands of largely fluorescent colour, hence its name. It is also known to change colour in different forms of light.

Pyrite

Naturally formed over millions of years, this pyrite cluster showcases a golden, brass-yellow colour, typical of the variety, with a metallic lustre, for which it is famously named ‘Fool’s Gold’.

Rhodochrosite

The colour of rhodochrosite is a brilliant pink, rose cherry red, or yellow in smooth crystal like formations. This mineral is often used in jewellery thanks to its shape and texture. It is often banded, and referred to as ‘bacon rock’ due to its white and pink stripes.

Additional information

These semi-precious stones vary from finger nail size up to 6cm2 (2.36in2).
Overall dimensions are for the case.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. The case stands on 4 round brass balled feet and has a hinge lid. These are naturally made, prehistoric specimens formed by nature over millions of years. As such, formations, variations and markings are natural and are to be celebrated as features of each specimen.
