Object Description
An unusual Crown Lambeth Ware floral painted trumpet shaped vase mounted with mythical Griffin like creatures dating from around 1895. The stoneware vase stands raised supported on a tall pierced scrollwork base applied with beading like octopus tentacles and with a wider round shaped base. The base supports a large trumpet shaped top with a flared and crimped rim the body finely hand painted with flowering blooms on trailing leafy stems with gilded trailing stems around the lower body. Four grotesque Griffin like creatures are mounted around the base of the body and are well modeled with raised gilded detail. The lower open work section and Giffins are painted in tones of pale brown while the upper body is painted in yellow, green, brown, white and blue enamels on a cream-colored ground. The rim of the vase is gilded with a powder green with gilding finish to the inner vase. The vase has a printed Crown Doulton Lambeth mark to the base along with various artist marks both incised and painted and bears numbers including 1467. We have not identified the artists.
