Object Description
Ca. AD 1100-1400
A silver ring featuring a broad, flat-section shank, providing both stability and comfort when worn. The shoulders of the ring are adorned with meticulously incised patterns. The applied shield-shaped bezel serves as the centrepiece of the ring, outlined by an incised line. It serves to symbolise protection, strength, and the military associations commonly associated with the Crusaders.
The Crusades were a series of military campaigns that aimed at taking the Holy Land from Muslim control. Considered at the time to be divinely sanctioned, these campaigns involved many ruthless battles. The call to arms was answered by the nobles and lower classes alike, with the object of the first crusade being access to various shrines associated with the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, above all the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the church in Jerusalem said to contain the tomb of Christ.
