Object Description

Ca. 1050-650 BC

A large Cypriot pottery vessel with an elegant, nearly spherical body. The vessel is supported by a ring foot and has a vertically protruding handle, featuring a central groove that connects the shoulder of the vessel to its lip. The mouth of the vessel is pinched to form a spout, facilitating precise and controlled pouring of its contents. The exterior surface of the vessel is adorned with bichrome decoration, incorporating black and red concentric circles and encircling bands that are meticulously painted, creating a visually dynamic composition that enhances the overall aesthetic of the vessel.

This decorative style reflects the artistic sensibilities and cultural traditions prevalent in Cyprus. Such barrel vessels were primarily utilized for the storage and transportation of various liquids, such as water, wine, or oils. The spherical body shape and the pinched spout allowed for efficient pouring without spillage, making it an indispensable tool for domestic and commercial use.
