Object Description
A scarce mid-century Studio Pottery Festival of Britain vase by renowned modernist potter Dame Lucie Rie (Austrian, 1902 – 1995) dated 1951. The bottle shaped vase stands on a round unglazed foot with slightly recessed base the body narrowing to a tall slender neck with a gently flaring oval shaped top. The vase is decorated in manganese black glazes with a white glazed top rim and interior. The vase has two small molded dates applied to each side of the body reading 1951. The vase has an LR monogram applied to the base along with a Phillips, London dale label for June 2000.
The Festival of Britain Director General, Sir Gerald Barry, lived in Albion Mews, London, where Lucie Rie’s studio was located. Both she and Hans Coper were both invited to have their work included in several of the displays at the festival.
