This elegant porcelain Monteith bowl was crafted by Royal Copenhagen as part of the renowned Flora Danica service, widely regarded as one of the most significant and collectible porcelain patterns in history. Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century Danish botanical encyclopedia of the same name, the service is celebrated for its meticulous scientific accuracy combined with exceptional artistic detail. The design has its origins in the lavish service commissioned in 1790 for Catherine the Great, with this particular piece produced in the 20th century.
Monteith bowls, originating in the late 17th century, were traditionally used to chill wine glasses, their notched or scalloped rims allowing stems to rest above ice. This example features a panelled form with a crenelated rim and applied side handles, marrying practical function with sculptural elegance. The exterior is adorned with delicately hand-painted botanical illustrations, each labelled in Latin on the reverse, exemplifying the precision and craftsmanship that define the Flora Danica service. Subtle gilding and a pink beaded border enhance its refined appearance.
The underside bears the Royal Copenhagen crown and factory mark, along with the three blue wavy lines, representing Denmark’s waterways. Additional numbers “3531” and “20” denote the model and internal production codes, while handwritten inscriptions identify the individual botanical subjects.
