Object Description

A rare antique 6-inch glazed tile by Doulton and Co. of Lambeth (stamped) depicting a hooded neoclassical figure symbolising Tragedy.

In this simple design, the seated figure is outlined in manganese on a white backdrop, cloaked in classical dress with knife in hand and a theatrical mask to the bottom right-hand corner.

With its unusual subject, this antique neoclassical tile is a brilliant collector’s item, having stood the test of time for more than 175 years.
