Object Description
An exceptional and finely made Aesthetic Movement Doulton Lambeth stoneware ewer with geometric and stylized leaf patterning by renowned artist Edith D Lupton and dated 1875. An early example the ewer stands on a wide round foot with a wide round shaped body narrowing towards the top and with a tall chimney shaped neck and top with a small pinched pouring spout. A loop handle with decorative edging is applied to the side. The jug has a geometric patterned border around the lower and upper body with a white beaded edge and with an incised stylized leaf pattern set within white beaded borders. With further patterning to the neck and handle the ewer is hand painted in tones of blue, green, brown and white on a salt glazed ground. The ewer has impressed makers marks incorporating the date 1875 and has incised EDL mark for Edith D Lupton along with assistant marks.
