Object Description
Excellent rich marquetry cabinet of triangular shape standing on two tapering legs at the front and one bracket foot in the back. Between canted corners and above an apron of curvy outline with marquetry depicting a mask accompanied by flower twigs, the cabinet opens with one door revealing a shelf. The panelled door shows a rich marquetry with a hanging flower basket crowned by a decorative bow. This central floral motif is framed by c-scroll and acanthus corner vignettes from which issue flower twigs. The canted corners are decorated with a fruit and flower garland marquetry. The top of the cabinet also shows excellent, partially green colored marquetry decoration in abundance: a singing bird is sitting amidst a large flower bouquet issuing from a neoclassical vase. From its base acanthus scrolls spread to the corners of the top ending in stylized profile heads wearing helmets. Another bird flying over the flower vase crowns the scene. The sides of the cabinet are left without decoration or veneer.
Despite the abundance of inlaid flowers and foliate a clarity in design prevails due to the symmetrical decoration and the dark background. A rare and beautiful piece displaying the high standard craftsmanship of the Dutch ebenists of the 18th century.
