Object Description
A Delightful Early 19th Century Italian Rectangular Gilt Wood Wall Mirror, In The Florentine Taste, Having Superbly Carved Intertwined Floral Decoration To Frame, Enclosing Replacement Mirror Plate And Original Old Back.
This fabulous early 19th century Italian giltwood wall mirror is the perfect size to fill a whole variety of different size spaces and settings around the home and comes with an incredibly elegant carved frame.
All things considered it is in excellent condition, with just a few old repairs and of course the expected scuffs and scrapes. More often than not however mirrors of this design have been left battered and bruised with many, many repairs and missing pieces so in our opinion its great to find one that has clearly been as well loved as this.
The mirror plate itself is old, but probably not early 19th century as the condition is a little too good for that, despite various old marks and ageing. There is also a possibility that the carved frame itself started life designed to hold a painting, only to be relatively quickly converted into the attractive wall mirror which we find today, as that is extremely common for mirrors of this design.
A feature we really like is the solid back, which is rarely found in later 19th century examples and is a real sign of quality.
It’s also worth noting that the mirror is designed in such a way that it will happily hang portrait or landscape, which of course significantly enhances the available functionality of this piece. At the moment it is wired for portrait hanging but it would be very simple to wire it instead for landscape.
