Early 19th century mahogany George III period antique armchair or desk chair. This chair has the elegant proportions of the very early 19th century, the reeding is close together and the legs are slender and finely turned. The construction at this period is among the most thorough in the world with great emphasis being placed on precision tenon joints for strength and corner stretchers hidden inside the seat at every corner. These skilled construction techniques were replaced with increased mechanisation during the Victorian period and had this chair been made just a few decades later it would have had dowelled joints and screwed-in corner blocks.
