Object Description

A Rare & Charming Early 19th Century Pine
Miniature Lambing Chair Retaining Superb
Colour And Patina, Probably Made As Childs
Toy Scale Model Originally

(Full scale Lambing Chairs were most common
sights within English, Welsh & Scottish Farmhouse
kitchens throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. When ewes gave birth they allowed
shepherds to sit all night in them resting by the
open fire protected from draughts by the chairs
wings and hood, whilst still being able to be on
hand as and when required at short notice. This
particular piece is of course a miniature example
and we believe that it may well have been made
as a scale model for a small child to use as a toy,
perhaps even sitting one of their dolls in, whilst
their father continued his night time vigil in the
full size counterpart.)
