Object Description

Woven circa 1880 in the renowned Laver district of Kirman, this elegant carpet reflects the refined aesthetic and technical mastery that define the finest Laver Kirman pieces. During the late 19th century, Laver Kirman workshops were heavily influenced by French decorative arts, particularly in their use of fluid curvilinear drawing, intricate florals, and soft, pastel palettes. These pieces were often designed to appeal to European tastes, blending Persian craftsmanship with a Western aesthetic sensibility—resulting in carpets that were as culturally cosmopolitan as they were visually harmonious.

The carpet’s field is rendered in a beautifully muted ground tone—subtle and atmospheric—over which is a rare all-over pattern of finely drawn floral sprays and palmettes. Shades of camel, burgundy, and denim-like blues form a rich, layered composition that shifts in intensity across the surface. The sage-toned border, generous in proportion, anchors the design and lends a soothing frame to the more intricate central patterning. This balance of structure and softness exemplifies the high artistic standards of Laver Kirman weaving during its golden age.

The piece is in very good, practical condition for everyday use. Its age has imparted a gentle patina to the naturally dyed colours. Despite some minor restoration work, done to a high standard, the pile is even and the original borders fully intact—a rarity for a carpet of this era.

With its poised elegance, cosmopolitan heritage, and well-preserved form, this carpet stands as a sophisticated testament to the legacy of Laver Kirman’s 19th-century ateliers.
