Object Description

Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate floral motifs one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.

This early Malayer rug, dating to c. 1890-1910, is a lovely example of its type. The background is formed of a rare, understated blue-grey tone, which serves as a wonderful backdrop to the earthy hues of its well-balanced monochrome overall drawing. The composition is framed by a light blue border of generous proportions, in relation to its narrower format, and the uniformity of colour across this and the central field – rather than the sharp contrast one finds in more traditional designs – lets the work a more open, spacious feel.

Preserved in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its outer borders retained on all sides – a slight age-related patina lends warmth and character to its colours.

An attractive example, with an effortless elegance to compliment a wide variety of interior styles.
