Object Description
Early Serapi Heriz carpets from North-West Persia are in a class of their own. Prized for their artistic geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal decorative rugs and have always stood out for their aesthetically appealing designs. The tribal characteristics of Serapi Heriz carpets give them the ability to blend in both contemporary and classic settings.
This unusual Serapi Heriz dating from the 1880’s has a rare, simpler overall pattern with a charming naivety. The borders are of an unusually wide proportion, with a very creative pattern that repeats in varied instead of uniform colours, a rare design for a rug from this region. This vari-coloured border frames the rug nicely, and its central pattern is very spacious and spontaneous.
The muted palette of harmonious vegetable-dyed colours include sky blue, terracotta, ivory, green and salmon pink, and all have aged gracefully over time.
This early Serapi Heriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use and would be a charming addition to a wide variety of settings.
