Object Description
Early Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet, c 1880
5.30 x 4.33 m
Ziegler Sultanabad carpets such as this example were commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement European furnishing tastes. Their unique, grand scale drawing, quiet formality, and wide colour palettes quickly made them sought-after additions to stately homes across the UK and Europe.
This early Ziegler Sultanabad piece, hand-woven in lustrous wool, features a bold drawing in natural vegetable dyes, with a rich terracotta ground, overlayed with scrolling vegetal and floral patterns in tones of ivory, caramel, and olive green, well framed by a duck egg blue border of grand proportions. The artist has employed a wonderfully dynamic composition, which lends the work a great sense of character, typical of the finest Ziegler pieces of the period.
A timeless classic, in very good to excellent condition, with a playful creativity that would suit a wide variety of interiors.
