Object Description
Eclectic collection of Qajar period lacquered wood pen cases
Persian, 19th Century
Largest: Height 4cm, width 27cm, depth 5cm
Smallest: Height 3cm, width 21cm, depth 3.5cm
Each pen case in this eclectic set of fifteen is crafted from lacquered and lithographed wood. Each case features a slide drawer (into which the pen sits) contained within its long, cigar shaped body. The lacquered surfaces are superbly finished with figurative scenes: pictures from the court, from landscapes of all kinds, of people of all characters, populate the surfaces. The quality of execution demonstrates why the Qajar period of Persian history is celebrated today for its artistic virtuosity.
