Object Description
A very fine steatite scaraboid, depicting the Egyptian Nile god Hapi on the reverse. The scaraboid is oval in shape, tapering at the ends. It’s obverse is decorated with geometric patterns at the each end, linked by vertical striations. The reverse depicts Hapi, the god of the annual flooding of the Nile, which would deposit rich silt on the river’s banks and fertilise the soil. He is depicted standing, striding forward and wearing his characteristic headdress of papyrus stalks. The scaraboid is pierced longitudinally for suspension.
