Object Description

Elegant C. 1880 ‘Hadji Jalili’ Tabriz Carpet
3.92 x 2.85

Antique Tabriz carpets are set apart by their excellent weaves and close adherence to the traditions of classical Persian rug design. Among these pieces, some of the most highly prized examples come from the workshop of the 19th and early 20th Century master weaver Hadji Jalili, whose carpets have come to adorn a number of grand historic houses across Europe and the UK.

This wonderful early Hadji Jalili work, dating to c. 1880, features an understated monochrome drawing, in muted earthy tones of ivory, hazelnut, soft greys and olive green, with deep chocolate browns in the spandrels and central medallion. The design features a series of repeated elegant floral patterns, in three concentric hexagons across the central field, all framed by a wide border, made up of over a dozen individual parts.

Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with its original outer borders and short fringes remarkably well preserved for a carpet of its age, this is a truly stunning piece, with a restrained elegance that would lend itself equally to either a classic or contemporary setting.
