Object Description
Elegant 1930s Kashan Carpet
6.09 x 4.10 m
Kashan carpets are well-known for the creativity of their designs and the quality of their craftsmanship. Rising to prominence under the Safavid Dynasty in the 16th Century, the weaving workshops of Kashan were responsible for some of the most elaborate and sought-after carpets of the period, continuing their production of high-value pieces well into the 20th Century.
This example, a top-end workshop weaving of the 1930s, features a wonderful ivory field, over which the drawing is worked in subtle tones of sky-blue and hazelnut, employing the floral designs common to the earlier Classical pieces for which Kashan is known, while eschewing the traditional central lozenge in favour of a more balanced, spacious composition. Additionally, the uniformity of colour across the central field and the border, rather than the typical stark contrast, lends the carpet a more elegant, modern feel, making it a versatile choice for either a classic or contemporary interior.
This fine Kashan carpet is in very good to excellent condition, still retaining its original outer borders on all sides.
A timeless work of art, well suited to compliment a wide variety of settings.
