Emil Theodor Richter (German, 1801–1878) – Italianate Landscape Painting
Emil Theodor Richter 1801–1878 was a German Grand Tour Italianate landscape artist working in the 19th century. Born in Berlin and studying in the the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin. He spent 4 years in Italy from 1835 – 39 frequenting with gentry on the Grand Tour. He made numerous studies and sketches on his travels, particularly of the Bay of Naples, Pompeii and Rome.
With the sketches and studies to hand he painted several large-scale Grand Tour paintings on his return to Germany. Including this Italianate landscape painting of a late evening sunset along the South Italian coast. In addition to his Italian inspired landscapes he also painted the landscapes of Bavaria and genre paintings.
The present Grand Tour Italianate landscape painting is oil on canvas, painted in 1843.
