Object Description
This large and impressive gilt bronze mantel clock is by the French Michel-François Piolaine. The clock body is raised by an architecturally formed, plinth-shaped base, set to the front with a relief scene, also of gilt bronze, portraying four putti celebrating the bounty of harvest. Above the base, the clock drum contains a circular gilt bronze dial with a partially rubbed signature. The theme of the harvest is continued with the large and impressive gilt bronze figure that surmounts the drum: likely Pomona, the Roman goddess of harvest and abundance, the figure sits atop the clock, the gilt bronze that forms her body beautifully cast and finished.
