Object Description
The city of Tabriz in north west Persia has been a major city of fine weaving since the 14th century. It experienced an artistic revival at the end of the 19th century and saw the emergence of one of the most important and influential Master weavers of the era, Hadji Jallili. He created magnificent court carpets with his unique creative drawings using light colour palettes and impeccable workmanship making them much sought after by interior designers and collectors. The best Tabriz carpets of this era are attributed to him and his workshop, many of which may be found in grand historic and stately homes across the UK and Europe.
With remarkable craftsmanship defining the clarity of its crisp drawing, the muted blue field is accented by shades of grey, providing a fabulous contrast to its pleasant monochrome overall design, all framed by a highly creative border of great proportions. With a palette rendered in vegetable-dyed wools, containing tones of green and sky-blue, this carpet has developed a charming age-related patina, coupled with its abrash (subtle variation in colour), contributing to the sophistication and quiet formality of the work.
This early Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, with only minor age-related restoration, achieved to a high standard. The multiple outer borders have been retained on all sides, remarkable for a carpet dating to the 1880s.
One of our favourite 19th Century workshop weavings, with an elegance sure to compliment a tasteful setting.
