Object Description

Exceptional c. 1890 Veramin Carpet
3.33 x 2.17 m

Antique Veramin carpets are widely recognized as among the most exceptional Persian workshop weavings, best known for their remarkable quality, fine crisp drawings and wide variety of rich vegetable-dyed colours. Early Veramin pieces would have been woven by the Shahsavan tribe, who settled in the city of Veramin after migrating from Northwest Persia, bringing with them the characteristic designs that set these carpets apart from those from the neighboring regions.

This extraordinary late 19th Century example features a rare pale blue field, overlayed with a geometric lattice pattern of pomegranate blossoms, symbolising prosperity, fertility and longevity, originally drawn from 18th Century rugs from Azerbaijan. The drawing – which, owing to the skill of its artist, has a remarkably crisp quality – is in tones of terracotta, sage green and ivory, with dark chocolate accents, framed by a wide border; a restrained palette and spacious composition which lends this piece a feeling of relaxed elegance, well suited to its large format.

With a good pile throughout, and still retaining its original fringes at both ends and selvedges on both sides, this carpet is in very good to excellent condition; a timeless work of art, to add character to any setting.
