Object Description

An exceptional late 18th century (circa 1800) large Baroque style carved walnut eagle in the form of a console table with onyx top.

This highly decorative eagle table consists of a finely figured and shaped moulded onyx top, not original, this being supported by a separate metal frame which can be attached to a wall.

Below, the large walnut eagle finely carved in the Baroque style with outspread wings is supported on a plinth base, the carved eagle possibly originating as a lectern and can be displayed as a superb independent carving if preferred.

The eagle represents St. John the Evangelist, author of the first Gospel, although can also be a representation of the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the eagle with outspread wings on a pole has been a symbol for victory since the Roman period.

This is a unique and very versatile item as it can either be used as a console table or eagle carving, it is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
