Object Description

The city of Kirman in north-east Persia has been the centre of fine rug weaving since the 17th century and enjoyed a renaissance in the 19th century when rug weaving became more widespread. Kirman established itself once again during this era as a centre of high category weavings in the best Persian tradition. 19th century Kirman carpets, particularly those in the Laver group, are known for their technically superior weaves, delicate drawings and an incomparable range of  varied colours. They are highly sought after and are often seen in grand historic houses in Europe and the UK.

An exquisite early Laver Kirman carpet dating circa 1860’s with an intricate overall drawing instead of the traditional central medallion motif.  Its remarkable quality wool and high knot density gives rise to the clarity and crispness of the drawing. This elegant example, with fine silky wool, was created before the commercialisation of carpet weaving so bears the quality, individuality and fineness of the earlier examples. The superb fineness of this carpet is usually seen in smaller rugs so a rare feature in a carpet of this large furnishing size. The rare ivory field provides a harmonious backdrop for the natural dyed colours including raspberry reds, various greens, sky-blue and muted bronze.

In very well-preserved condition for everyday use, still retaining all its original borders and fringes at both ends, not common in a rug dating over 140 years.

A rare elegant beauty and would be a wonderful addition to various settings.

Viewing this physically is highly recommended in order to appreciate its intrinsic elegance and beauty as images do not do it real justice.
