An exceptional early Ziegler Sultanabad carpet with a clear, crisp drawing due to its very fine weave. The creative well-balanced overall pattern in the central field has designs cleverly repeated in a different shapes and colour combinations, framed beautifully by a unique light-blue border. The colours are all natural vegetable dyed which have aged nicely.

This attractive rug belongs to a group of carpets specifically commissioned in west Persia during the Late 19th/Early 20th century to complement European furnishing tastes. They are unique due to their grand scale drawings, quiet formality and use of soft understated colours and are often seen in grand stately homes in Europe and the UK.

In very well preserved condition for everyday use, still retaining its original plain borders on all sides and fringes at both ends – a remarkable feature for a rug of its age.
