Object Description

An exquisite mid 19th century (circa 1850) Anglo Indian padouk & satinwood profusely carved freestanding davenport of large scale, probably Bombay Presidency.

The davenport consists of a carved and pierced gallery with floral and foliate decoration leading down to a tooled leather writing surface, the top opening to reveal a fitted satinwood interior with pigeon holes, the exterior of the davenport top having high relief carved decoration to all four sides.

The base consisting of superb quality high relief profusely carved foliate decoration to all four sides with wonderful pierced and carved brackets to the front consisting of floral, foliate and fruit decoration with scrolling acanthus below.

The davenport having a cupboard to each side, the doors opening to reveal four graduated satinwood drawers, the panelled back also with superb high relief foliate, floral and fruit carved decoration, all supported on a carved plinth with carved feet and terminating on brass castors.

This style of carving being typical on pieces of furniture from the Bombay region of India dating to around 1840-1860, similar carved items can be found in the book ‘Furniture From British India And Ceylon’ by Amin Jaffer, pages 334-347

This piece is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
